PALS for Life

Programs: Plan of Care/Case Management:

A “Person Centered Approach” is used to tailor activities and services for each participant’s current level of care. The care plan is written with input from both family and staff and reviewed quarterly or as needed to evaluate the goals of each participants plan. Family Members/Caregivers and Social Workers are invited to participate in the care planning so that issues may be address during the planning sessions. PALS maintains a ration of 1-6 staff to participants, with this ratio, we are able to provide extra time and attention that is necessary for Seniors and Adults with disabilities. All of PALS staff members are certified in “Person Centered Approach”.

  • Health Monitoring

PALS require each participant to have a Medical Examination Report filled out by their physician yearly. If the doctor does not do a TB test then the nurse will do this procedure yearly.

We also review participant’s medications quarterly and request that any changes in medications are reported to the nurse immediately. If a participant requires medication during the day at PALS this is administered by the nurse.

All participants are weighted monthly. Weights will also be taken more frequently if deemed necessary by the physician, family or nurse.

Every participant’s blood pressure is taken monthly; participants who has high blood pressure or if the BP is elevated.

All our diabetic participant’s blood glucose levels are taken once a month. On physician’s request this can be done on a daily or weekly schedule also. If a participant need an insulin injection while at PALS this can be administered by the nurse.

  • Activities:

PALS Adult Day Care uses the “Centers” approach to activities. Participants are divided into groups to perform different activities. The Centers approach provides staff and participants with a more intimate setting to do activities in a smaller group. The staff and participants are able to interact more closely providing a more stimulating and hands on environment as opposed to working in a larger group. During the course of a week, the participants move from center to center doing interesting and different activities based on the theme for the week. Some of the Centers include Learning/Reading, Arts & Crafts, TV, Games, Culinary, Music, Computers and Wellness.

These activities help maintain a regular daytime schedule and routine to promote nighttime sleeping pattern and to assist caregiver’s quality of life.

  • Art Therapy:

Treatment combined with the right activities, such as an Art Program can help make life better for individuals with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s according to research by the Alzheimer’s Association. During Art Classes, painters enter a room filled with a collection of music from the30’s, 40’s 50’s and. Joel and Marsha Saperstein volunteer in art therapy here at PALS. Joel sets up pictures or former art pieces on the table to jump-start ideas or spark a memory. “They can tell their story and express things that otherwise would not be asked about,” Joel says “For some it’s getting recognized for the first time in many years.” Joel says “it’s the process, not the final product, is stressed. “It’s an easy, low-pressure experience. Nobody is looking for masterpieces by any means. If you can let colors flow on a piece of paper, that’s fine,” Joel says. “The last thing I want is for anyone to feel frustrated or inadequate.” Everyone completes a portrait sees a finished product and has a feeling of accomplishment.

    Music Therapy:

Music is the soundtrack of our lives. Our participants enjoy an array of different music daily during devotion, exercise and rest times. During our Music Center, we talk about different musicians and styles of music. Participants are given the opportunity to create music by using different musically instruments, which are provided by PALS. Queen University Music Department provides music therapy to our participants weekly during their fall and spring semesters.
